|Maurita Avell-Taxo, PhD|
|Date of Birth:||8 October 2407|
|Place of Birth:||Leran Manev, Trill|
|Parents:||Natal & Elita Avell|
Maurita Avell was born on October 8, 2407 on Trill. She was the only child of Natal and Elita Avell. She grew up in the capital city of Leran Manev, near the Bes Manev Mountains. Maurita attended public schools during her early years of childhood, until her parents were killed in an accident that the Trill officials had not explained to her. She was 11 when her parents died, and her uncle, Darzen Avell, took her in as his own daughter, raising her together with her cousin Tabora.
Maurita had a difficult time accepting her parents' death. She blamed her parents for leaving her and had difficulty in establishing relationships with her peers. She became withdrawn and distant, and Darzen took her out of the public schools and brought private tutors to the home as well as counsellors to help her cope with her loss.
She maintained a close emotional attachment with Darzen, which they had both come to depend on when her cousin Tabora left the family home to attend college when Maurita was 14. Maurita had come out of her depression through the help of counselling and support from her remaining family and developed a tempered, even toned demeanour, although she still has bad dreams and a residual fear of the dark.
She had a lot of friends and dated several young men off and on, to which Darzen did much grumbling. Maurita returned to public school, and focused her studies on mathematics and physics. She always felt drawn to the sciences, and physics particularly, to follow in Darzen's footsteps. He was a renowned physicist on Trill and worked with the government on various projects for nearly 40 years. Maurita graduated from school near the top of her class. She decided that she would continue her studies in physics but Darzen suddenly became ill, and Maurita put off all of her own plans in order to care for him. She spent a year caring for her uncle until he recovered. He felt a sense of responsibility for the time she had sacrificed taking care of him, and he encouraged her to find her own path. He suggested that she consider attending a school off of Trill until she decided what she wanted to do.
Maurita spent the rest of that summer with her friends, listening to their own ambitions and plans, and dreaming about what her own future would bring, and where it may take her. She had never considered leaving Trill, but many of her classmates that she graduated with were now doing so, and she began to think about the possibilities that may lie outside of her home world.
She became entangled in a romantic relationship with her best friend's brother that summer. She began to talk about foregoing collegiate studies to settle with this man, who wanted to take her to Mak'ala with him and start a family. Darzen gently encouraged her to consider all of her options, and while not discounting romance, begged her not to forego her studies, to which she had applied herself so diligently. Several months before she would have left for Mak'ala, she broke off the relationship, and decided that she would leave Trill. She told Darzen that she wanted to see the galaxy and experience her own success before she decided to settle down.
She decided that she would submit an application to Starfleet Academy to continue her physics studies where she could apply them. One of her greatest weaknesses is also one of her greatest driving forces, her fear of disappointing her uncle. He has described her as one of the most ambitious women he has ever known, yet she maintains an inner sense of doubt about herself, and tends to hold herself back for fear of failure. She holds much higher expectations of herself than others do of her, and many of her friends consider her a perfectionist. It's something she wants to work at being able to use to her advantage rather than being a flaw.
Upon commissioning, Maura was appointed to the Escort Frigate USS Wethesa (NCC-90210) under the command of then-Lieutenant Taxo where she was assigned to the science division. On 31 August 2430 she was promoted to Lieutenant (Junior Grade) and shortly thereafter on 13 December 2430, she was transferred to the Light Cruiser USS Pathfinder (NCC-91890) under the command of Captain S'var. She was appointed Chief Science Officer until reassigned to the Reserve Officers' Pool on Deep Space 9 where, under the personal orders of Captain Cross, she was assigned to the station's science division.
Personality & Traits
Maura is quiet and reserved. Her demeanour often gives the impression of being docile, although she is ambitious in her goals. She is loyal and honest, and her family and loved ones are the first priority she holds in her life. Although timid by nature, she can be ruthless when provoked, especially when threatened or protecting those she loves.
She is 1.65 meters (5'4") tall. She has long dark brown hair with wispy bangs that frame her face. Her eyes are soft with a mix of green and brown. Terrans would call the color of her eyes hazel. She has spot markings that begin just above her browline and continue down the side of her face and neck, extending down the full length of her body - the hallmark of the Trill.
She wears the standard Starfleet two-piece duty uniform; consisting of a long-sleeved uniform jacket and a matching pencil skirt which falls just above the knees, both the colour of midnight black. The jacket and skirt carry a trim of peacock blue that plainly states her department as Science. Over the jacket she wears a peacock blue lab coat that falls just above the hemline of her skirt. Upon the left side of the coat sits the Starfleet insignia; a silver outlined arrowhead against an uneven pair of gold trapezoids. On the right collar of the jacket sits two solid gold pips that denotes her rank of Lieutenant. She wears a gold and opal wedding ring: Silvery, gold and fiery orange-red, this ring catches and refracts the light as Avell-Taxo moves her hand, easily catching the attention. The 18-carat gold band is inlayed with delicate threads of platinum shaping a pair of old Terran-style rocket ships, streaking towards the centre stone from either side. A brilliant Trill fire opal is the centre point of the ring, set flush with the band. Deep, warm orange-red, it catches and throws back the light, like a star where the two rockets intend to meet.
A two-piece Starfleet officer's dress uniform, comprised of a white dress jacket trimmed in gold parallel along the front edges, as well as along the shoulders with a matching skirt. Beneath that lies a blue-grey horizontally piped tunic. The peacock blue trim along the tunic collar and half-inch stripe on the jacket cuff signify the division of Science. Fastened on the collar is the rank insignia of two solid gold pips which denotes the rank of Lieutenant. The left chest hold the Starfleet stylized gold arrowhead against a silver oval backdrop. The skirt is a matching white, striped with gold along the outer thighs. A row of medals and citations are pinned along the left breast of the uniform jacket.
A loose, flowing, off-the-shoulder top of light blue chiffon which accentuates her graceful neck. Its high-low hemline falls just past her waist in front and to the tops of her thighs in back. The accompanying teal pleated skirt is made of a woven cotton blend. Its hem, trimmed in delicate blue floral embroidery which perfectly matches the shade of her top, flutters just above her knees. The top and skirt seem to flow and swirl around her as she moves, creating a relaxed, breezy effect, and delicate black sandals with teal beading on the straps adorn her feet.
