Prior to Stardate 66065.57, Starfleet titled the "one-star" rank as a Junior Admiral (JADM). When Vice Admiral Jacob Hathaway was appointed Chief of Starfleet Operations, Directive #1 from his new office was to have that rank renamed to its current title of Branch Admiral (BADM).
Before the advent of the title Junior Admiral in 2365, this rank was known as a Rear Admiral (lower half) (abbreviated as RDML) in Starfleet.
In Starfleet, Branch Admirals must have a minimum of twenty years service as a commissioned officer before being considered for promotion to flag rank. It is preceded by at least six months' service as a Commodore. Branch Admirals are often placed as Fleet and Task Force Commanding Officers, or as Starbase COs. They may also be appointed as deputy chiefs at the division level (ie: Deputy Chief of Starfleet Science), in rare cases as a Chief of a Division (most likely in an acting capacity).
Starfleet used the following rank insignia to denote this rank of officer:
(as JADM until 2388)
Branch Admirals within the MSS are rare and are only allowed in few billets. The Chief of the Starfleet Merchant & Supply Service, if promoted to this grade, may wear this insignia on his or her uniform. The Chief and Deputy Chief of Starfleet Logistics, should they hold this grade as an active-duty Starfleet officer, are allowed the privilege of wearing an MSS rank when aboard an MSS vessel or visiting an MSS installation while duty. This honor is provided in spite of their status as a full-time military professional.
