Cunningham, born the 10th July 2379 aboard the cargo frieghter "SS Pickford", is the only child of Andrew and Laura Cunningham en-route to Qo'nos. His father, Captain Andrew Cunningham still currently serves with Starfleet as a lecturer at the Academy. He has always been the highest role model for his son despite being away on assignment for most of his son’s childhood during both the Breen and Alliance Civil Wars. His mother, Laura, taught her son the difficulties of life as a near-single parent on Qo'nos, especially during the Civil War with his father choosing to side himself and his ship with Admiral Kyle Richards. He has learned to do things for himself and to do as requested without question for the benefit of others.
The news and images of both the Breen and Alliance Civil Wars galvanised Cunningham to embracing his Terran roots and becoming deeply loyal to institutions. The concept of his nationality is a large part of his identity. This is reflected in some of his social attitudes, which seem to embrace an identity of the not too distant past. When pressed, Cunningham seems to identify with the notion of helping to 'protect the realm', of 'serving the monarch' and the ideals embodied in the mythic notion of chivalry.
Fortunately for Cunningham, his father decided to settle back into home life, accepting a lecturing position at the Alliance Academy shortly after his eighteenth birthday. He found that he had an affinity for sport that helped him make friends, and he was a starting midfielder on his school's soccer a cricket team for his last two years there, known for his skill with both the bat and ball. He was also a natural leader, and was appointed captain of both teams.
Starfleet was the natural choice for Cunningham. His memories of his father and the stories he told of his grandfather and great-grandfather marked him out for nothing else. A desire to be in the command branch came from the combination of his own natural leadership ability and his desire to be the one out in front, however, his prowess at piloting directed him towards Flight Control but it remains one of his firm goals.
Starfleet Academy to Cunningham was just a bigger, more realistic experience than the stories he had heard from his father. His flight instructor, Commander Baldwin, became another role model, nearly an idol to Cunningham. As his mentor, Commander Baldwin gave more time to the young cadet, ensuring his skills were up to scratch before even moving on a touch. These teaching experiences have stuck with Cunningham ever since.
Owing to a single-minded drive since childhood for a Starfleet career, Cunningham has "never been a family man". However, when asked about having children of his own Cunningham once replied that "wishing for a thing does not make it so." Lingering throughout Cunningham's life is a series of unsuccessful romantic relationships, stemming in part from his introspective nature as a career officer and his self-professed desire to avoid long-term commitments.
Before you stands a well built young human male of just over six feet. His tousled light brown hair complements his even, biscuit-coloured tan and ice-blue eyes, which constantly scan his surroundings. His face, while weathered for a man of his age is unmarked, save for a small thin scar below his left cheekbone, which all but disappears when he smiles. His body while toned, is not a rippling mass of muscle, offering a wiriness to his frame. A pair of powerful arms fall from broad shoulders to rest gently at his side. His legs are a contrast to his upper body, powerfully built akin to that of a professional athlete or runner.
Upon his form, is the standard Starfleet two-piece duty uniform; consisting of the space black uniform jacket and grey shoulders which meet the blackness with a lighter grey trim. A quarter of an inch underneath the trim of the grey shoulder on the left chest, is the redesigned Starfleet insignia: A stylized gold arrowhead against an open silver rectangular shape. Underneath the uniform jacket resides a wine red turtleneck, which denotes his department or division as Command. The cuffs of the uniform jacket hold a half-inch stripe of wine red same as the turtleneck. On the right side of the neck of the turtleneck is a single solid pip (o), which signifies the rank of Ensign. The rest of the uniform consists of uniform trousers which are the same basic color as the jacket, space black.
Personality & Traits
Part of Cunningham's private nature includes a difficulty in confronting deep personal issues, which then tend to become suppressed. Philosophically, he sees life and death as more than two choices of eternal or momentary existence. He believes there is another concept yet beyond human understanding. Genetic engineering with its pre-determination disturbs him, saying it robs humanity of the unknown factor that makes life worth living. Having to be patient in the presence of mounting problems, even if it is unavoidable or even the best path to take, is unsettling to him, nevertheless, he has shown a clear skill in knowing when to solicit opinions and when to act decisively. Cunningham had few friends as a child and self-admittedly "skipped his childhood," due to his early, single-minded drive to join Starfleet. Cunningham graduated at or near the top of his Academy class, even though he once failed an Academy class over a woman and was called at least once to the Academy superintendent's office.
Cunningham keeps a healthy outlook on life with a wide variety of interests and recreational pursuits and enjoys pushing himself to the limit, both mentally and physically. Cunningham's stress levels actually drop when the stakes are higher. He is prone to boredom and mild depression when not challenged. Cunningham enjoys drinking and gambling, although the former seems to be a way for him to test his personal limits at times rather than a vice. Cunningham has been known to gamble more than he can afford to lose, although he always gambles with a plan and a clear understanding of the odds. He enjoys Terran literature in its written rather than visual display, though he avoids acting or any other performance art himself despite an interest in classical music. He has studied semantics and keeps his Latin fresh, but has no interest in politics, dance or small animals.
Cunningham seeks structure in his life. He is a man of pattern and habit. He has acquired strong tastes. He both thrives under structure yet finds subtle ways of rebelling against it. He is not self-destructive, but he can be a challenge to his superiors. Cunningham uses humor as a shield and a weapon. He is skilled at making cutting remarks that reveal insecurities of others or mock death, danger and risk.
Cunningham enjoys excellent health, thanks to a regimen carried over from his days as an athlete. He still finds time for fencing, racquetball and equine sports, but he does show a tendency for overwork, avoids formal vacations, and has reported bouts of insomnia. His aversion to annual physicals must also be noted and dealt with. He has sustained numerous injuries on occasion, none with long-lasting physical damage.
