Senator M'rus of Ferasa Annonces Candidacy for Chancellorship
IC Date: Wed Sep 10 2403
"There has been much made in the rumour of how quiet this election has been. And I think the press is right to pick up on this. The safe bet, the smart bet, is to stay quiet. To keep your head down. Who wants to be attacked for putting their head over the parapet in these tough times? Well, I want to have a debate on ideas. A debate on the future. A debate on the things that matter to the people of the Galaxy Alliance"
"We are at a crossroads as a political entity. I have long espoused the need for us to do more at the system and regional level rather than rely on the massive centralized bureaucracy we have created. We have so many hard working civil servants in the Galaxy Alliance and I do not slight the tough jobs they do; but do you expect an Andorian who has never left Andor save to travel to Spacedock to know how agricultural policy on Bajor should be run? Or a Caitian to lecture a Klingon on exactly how best to defend their system. More needs to be spread out."
"There are some things we do well as a whole. Starfleet. Our diplomatic service. And these things should remain and be focused on by the Galaxy Alliance. It is by focusing on our core roles and giving power back to the systems that we will stop this Alliance from fracturing. We will put an end to any more Bajors, any more Beeraxs. We will put an end to centrally funded splurges through the boom years of our economy so we have nothing left for the lean years, where we should be spending money to stimulate the economy."
"Because I want these things, because I believe in these things, and because I demand these things be part of our public debate as a Citizen of this Galaxy Alliance, it is my humble pleasure to announce my candidacy for Chancellor of the Galaxy Alliance."
M'rus lifts a paw to the press pack and smiles as he steps away from the podium, his aide stepping in to field the various procedural questions that follow.
