Benedict Edward Talbot, born Stardate 68522.78, in the Earth year 2391 is the only child of Major Alexander Talbot, Starfleet Marines and Doctor Jennifer Talbot M.D. Benedict was born aboard Deep Space Nine, whilst his parents were en-route to his father's new posting at Spacedock and raised in his ancestral homeland of the Scottish Highlands, following the end of the terraforming efforts on Earth. Benedict's relationship with his father soured considerably after the death of his mother in a freak shuttle accident. Mainly due to his father's past-experiences, harsh upbringing, and his commitment to the Marine Corps, Benedict held a deep resentment towards his father in his years as a child. At the age of six in 2398, Benedict was left in the care of a family friend on Earth. His father returned to active duty to serve in the Tzenkethi War following the annexation of the Stebben system and destruction of La Forge Shipyards, persuaded by his friend and colleague Captain Tom Gregson. His father was later killed during the assault to liberate Stebben when his dropship was brought down by enemy fire.
Benedict was left alone in the cold, both of his parents now dead. With no family to turn to, and guilt ridden about inadvertently causing the death of his friend, Gregson took the young Benedict Talbot in as his Guardian and raised him, returning to the glens of Scotland. His formulative years were spent between private schools and learning the craft of a Ghillie from Gregson, spending his spare time learning to shoot, track and to fend for himself in the harsh environment that Scotland's Highlands can be.
Nearing the end of his time in education, Benedict became more and more interested in the idea of serving with Starfleet, despite resenting everything that turned his father into what he was. Gregson on the other hand, was nearly the opposite of how his father had treated him and showed that despite being a Marine, you could still be 'human'.
Despite being the son of and raised by a Marine, Benedict chose Starfleet over the Marine Corps and enrolled, being accepted into Starfleet Academy and arriving in the Plebe Summer of 2409 and assigned to Lima Company. During his initial six weeks of the Plebe Summer, Cadet Talbot found himself adjusting with more ease than some of his peers due to his upbringing and found himself at least a little thankful to his father for the harsh upbringing melt out to him during his younger years.
Talbot's first year began in earnest, though initially considering what comforts or therein lack of granted by his status as a fourth-class cadet as little better than prison life, he grew accustomed to the idea of entitled to nothing and striving to earn what he did. After completing his initial training, Benedict opted to major in both strategic operations and security operations, while further still opting to minor in flight control.
In his second and third years, although primarily engaged in study sessions with fellow strategic operations and security class cadets, Benedict completed his flight training and undertook advanced courses in hand-to-hand combat and weapon proficiency training. It was at this time Benedict discovered his love of Ju-Jitsu, something that remains a passion of his to this day.
In his fourth year, he was assigned to a border patrol-based heavy cruiser for his six month cadet cruise, returning to Starfleet Academy in 2413. Commissioned as an Ensign the same year, Talbot decided to remain at the Academy for another two years in order to complete his Masters and later Doctorate degree in strategic security operations and undertake training as a tactical officer, citing his reasons as essential to becoming a well-rounded officer before graduating as a Lieutenant (Junior Grade) in 2417.

Standing here before you is a well built human male of about six and and a half feet tall, the smell of leather and blood clinging to him like perfume. His outward appearance, whilst not striking shows signs of age beyond his years and much hardship. His deep emerald-green eyes appear rigid and cold, as they constantly flicker about, taking in the surroundings as if memorising them. His hair, shaved in a military-style along the sides though still long enough to style or part on top, almost at contrast with his eyes is a dirty blonde colour and streaked with grey. It wafts around him like muddy straw in the breeze, it's tendrils curling and moving of their own volition. His tanned face, all but void of emotion with only rare signs of ups, downs, or in-betweens, as with the rest of his body appears to be unmarked by visible or noticeable scars, although noticeably weathered as if to suggest he has spent a great deal of time outdoors amongst the elements. A week's worth of stubble perhaps covers this man's lower face and chin, grey pitting the black shadow to give an almost salt and pepper effect.
He wears the standard Starfleet two-piece duty uniform; consisting of a long-sleeved uniform jacket and matching slacks, both the color of midnight black. The jacket and slacks carry a trim of wine red that plainly states his department as Command. On the jacket it trims on the shoulders, separating the chest area, while on the slacks it runs down the outside of the legs to the same-colored uniform shoes. Upon the left side of the chest resides the Starfleet insignia; a silver outlined arrowhead against an uneven pair of gold trapezoids. On the right collar of the jacket sits two solid pips and a single open or black pip (ooo) that denotes his rank of Lieutenant Commander.
Upon his form are the Combat Fatigues of the Starfleet Marine Corps. The thick material is a dull, non-reflective space black, with a ripstop weave and tough enough to turn all but the sharpest knives. Embedded into the uniform are integral armored pads, flexible enough to be comfortable, but designed to withstand impacts from hand to hand combat and projectile weapons alike. A thin ring of dull, flexible, black metal makes a wide oval around the base of the turtleneck collar and wrists; the emitters for the emergency EVA field. The Starfleet Marine insignia , is woven into the left breast of one-piece uniform over his heart with a dark grey thread, keeping the visibility of the uniform low. The rank insignia, two solid gold pips and a single open or black pip (ooo) sits on the right side of the collar to denote the rank of Lieutenant Commander and is embroidered in the same muted tones. Utility pockets reside on thighs and calves of uniform for necessary items. Heavy black boots are zipped closed high at the ankle, attaching to the main uniform and allowing the pants to `blouse out' over the footwear.
Off Duty Wear
At first glance even a civilian would consider 'casual'. Khaki cargo trousers cover the tops of a pair of black old-Earth style Converse sneakers. His top half is only covered by a black t-shirt, poking through the top a partially unzipped grey hoodie. The hoodie itself is covered by a customised leather flying jacket with the picture of a naked pin-up 'Devil' girl, lying seductively beneath a Wasp-class warp fighter.
Personality & Traits
Part of Benedict's private nature includes a difficulty in confronting deep personal issues, which then tend to become suppressed. Philosophically, he sees life and death as more than two choices of eternal or momentary existence. He believes there is another concept yet beyond human understanding. Genetic engineering with its pre-determination disturbs him, saying it robs humanity of the unknown factor that makes life worth living. Having to be patient in the presence of mounting problems, even if it is unavoidable or even the best path to take, is unsettling to him, nevertheless, he has shown a clear skill in knowing when to solicit opinions and when to act decisively. Benedict had few friends as a child and self-admittedly "skipped his childhood," due to his early, single-minded drive to join Starfleet. Benedict graduated at or near the top of his Academy class, even though he once failed an Academy class over a woman and was called at least once to the Academy Superintendent's office.
Benedict keeps a healthy outlook on life with a wide variety of interests and recreational pursuits and enjoys pushing himself to the limit, both mentally and physically. Benedict's stress levels actually drop when the stakes are higher. He is prone to boredom and mild depression when not challenged. Benedict enjoys drinking and gambling, although the former seems to be a way for him to test his personal limits at times rather than a vice. Benedict has been known to gamble more than he can afford to lose, although he always gambles with a plan and a clear understanding of the odds. He enjoys Terran literature in its written rather than visual display, though he avoids acting or any other performance art himself despite an interest in classical music. He has studied semantics and keeps his Latin fresh, but has no interest in politics, dance or small animals.
Benedict seeks structure in his life. He is a man of pattern and habit. He has acquired strong tastes. He both thrives under structure yet finds subtle ways of rebelling against it. He is not self-destructive, but he can be a challenge to his superiors. Benedict uses humour as a shield and a weapon. He is skilled at making cutting remarks that reveal insecurities of others or mock death, danger and risk.
Benedict enjoys excellent health, thanks to a regimen carried over from his days as an athlete. He still finds time for fencing, racquetball and equine sports, but he does show a tendency for overwork, avoids formal vacations, and has reported bouts of insomnia. His aversion to annual physicals must also be noted and dealt with. He has sustained numerous injuries on occasion, none with long-lasting physical damage.
An approachable, gregarious individual, Benedict has made many friends across a range of worlds and status, from Kai Lishan Noryl to Starfleet Admiral Jonathan Starr. Those that shared his closest, personal confidence appear to be limited to a few, including Kainon Essa, Dominic Rayner, Samuel Riley and M'hrr.
Benedict and Kainon have shared a long-term friendship...
