The USS Indomitable (NCC-64005) was an Akira-class and later an Indomitable-class multimission heavy cruiser in the 24th and 25th centuries.
Ship's History
Originally commissioned on Stardate 68072 as the last ship in the design of the Akira-class heavy cruiser, Indomitable's first commanding officer was then-Commander Gregorio Giovanni. The ship's first assignment was with the Starfleet Border Patrol under his command, making it one of the first ships to traverse the entire expanse of the Galaxy Alliance on a single patrol route. CDR Giovanni held command of Indomitable until Stardate 68823.97.
Shortly after the departure of her first commanding officer and crew, Indomitable was among those ships placed in the active reserve fleet (also known as the "mothball fleet") during the Fleet Consolidation Act of 2391. She would remain docked at various shipyards, including La Forge Fleetyards, Antares Shipyards, and later, Utopia Planitia Fleetyards.
Indomitable and four other starships were moved from reserve status to active duty on Stardate 76705,. She underwent a refit from Mk II to Mk IV, and then was assigned to the command of then-Captain Jason X. Reed, once again under the command of the Border Patrol. CAPT Reed would remain in command until Stardate 78104.47. After a crew rotation and port duty for ten months, Indomitable would sail again under a new CO, this time under Captain I. R. Xanathos. CAPT Xanathos and his crew would man Indomitable until Stardate 79213.74.
On Stardate 79304, eleven years after it was brought back into active duty, Indomitable was returned to the mothball fleet to serve as a holding vessel at Utopia Planitia. It was stripped of all major systems, including the warp core, impulse drive, weapons, shields, and even pieces of its armor. During the next four years, it was a shell of its former self.
A move to convert the remaining Akira-class starship into a marine fighter carrier was initiated by the Starfleet Advanced Starship Design Bureau. Indomitable would now become the lead ship in a new class of multimission heavy cruisers based upon the brand new next-generation systems such as the new Hybrid power generation system, ablative armor and regenerative shielding. The addition of science labs and a marine complex aboard repurposed its use from an assault cruiser to a carrier-cruiser with full offensives capabilities to rival that of a brand new starship coming off the line. It was recommissioned as an Indomitable-class cruiser on Stardate 86920.1.
Starfleet transferred Indomitable to the Exploration Command for the first time in its career, under the command of Commander Ael'Ihhuein Adamson on Stardate 86921.67. Marine Space Group (MSG) 333 was attached to Indomitable under the command of LTCOL John Stark.
