Vice Chancellor Forcibly Promotes Beerax Bill to Senate Floor
IC Date: Tue Nov 4 2403
PARIS, EARTH (INW) - The Chairmen of the Senate Committees of the Interior, Foreign Relations and Defense are calling for the resignation of the [[Galaxy Alliance]] Vice Chancellor this evening, after he used an obscure parliamentary procedure to forcibly move pending legislation out of their respective committees and directly to the floor for a vote.
Utilizing a procedure known as reconsideration, the Vice Chancellor halted committee debate on the bills for Beeraxi secession, elections financing, and the nomination hearings for the newly-appointed Deputy Ministers of State and Defense. Reconsideration has only ever been used twice, and was designed to ensure that declarations of war, or bills related to war financing, would not get stalled in committee once a special session is called.
Conservatives have loudly protested the move, calling it an unprecedented power grab. At least ten Senators have announced proposals to amend the practice, restricting its use to only war-related bills. Such proposals would need to wait until the next session begins in January, however.
In a statement, the Vice Chancellor stated he "promoted bills that have stalled simply because Senators have repeatedly asked to adjourn so that members can return to their campaigning." He dismissed calls for his resignation, stating he'd "be gone by the end of the year anyway," citing that he is not running for reelection.
Debate will now begin on the Senate floor related to Beeraxi secession, completely skipping the Committee of the Interior. In July, the Interior Committee voted to table the secession bill, sparking protests on the colony world. Though conservatives in the Senate have vowed to prevent a vote, sources close to the Senate indicate that they most likely lack the votes to do so. A final vote on Secession is now expected by the end of the month.
